Locky Kahl, known in the DJ world as Kord, has been controlling the decks as a Fat Controller resident DJ for over 2 years. We had a chat to the legend himself about his time so far with the Fat Man and got to know a bit more about his experience as a DJ in Adelaide.
When did you first become a DJ and how long have you been a resident at Fat Controller Club?
I first started DJing at the age of 13 back in 2009 and have never looked back. After years of playing private and warehouse parties reaching adulthood allowed me to move into playing gigs at various bars. Eventually, I stepped into the rotation at Fat Controller… that was over 2 years ago now.
Why did you start and what has motivated you to continue?
I played various instruments throughout my formative years but could never settle on one because I love such a diverse range of sounds and compositions. The draw of dance music and its willingness to be blended and manipulated was the perfect platform for me. As such when a good friend of mine spent all his savings on a set of decks I made sure I was a guest every night at his place.
Just like anything else in life passion for music waxes and wanes, I’ve gone through periods when playing sets became a chore and the late nights got to me. But when I discover new songs, artists or completely new styles all together; the desire to use a platform to share this music with an audience becomes overwhelming. I think that feeling is what keeps every DJ going.
Who are your main DJing inspos?
Seth Troxler, Oliver $, Carl Cox, KiNK
What is your go to crowd pleasing track?
I can never scroll past the uplifting Piano House banger that is “You’re Sunshine – Weiss"
What has been your favourite Fat Controller moment so far?
It would have to be a tie between seeing an entire room captivated by modern jazz legends BadBadNotGood, and the pumping dance floor when Basement Jaxx played their first ever Adelaide Club show!
Fun fact about yourself?
In the last 9 years of my career, I’ve never had a “proper” DJ name… until now.
